The NEET UG 2026 exam wrapped up on 3 May 2026 — and if you just walked out of the exam hall, your next question is probably: when does the answer key come out, and how do I calculate my score? This guide answers exactly that.

Exam Date: 3 May 2026
Paper Codes: 11, 12, 13, 14
Official Site: neet.nta.nic.in
Marking: +4 / −1
Max Score: 720
📢
Latest Update (4 May 2026): NTA has not released the official provisional answer key yet. Unofficial answer keys by coaching institutes (Allen, Aakash, Resonance, PW) are now available. The official provisional answer key is expected in the first week of June 2026 at neet.nta.nic.in. Some reports suggest it may arrive as early as 10–15 May 2026 based on NTA's past release patterns.

The National Testing Agency (NTA) conducted NEET UG 2026 on 3 May 2026 in a single shift from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Around 22.79 lakh candidates appeared across 566 exam cities — 552 within India and 14 abroad. That's roughly 22 lakh students all asking the same question right now: what did I score?

The answer key is your first tool to find out. It lets you compare your responses with the correct answers, calculate an expected score, and decide your next steps — all before NTA officially declares the result. If something looks wrong in the key, you can even challenge it and possibly change your score.

Here's everything you need to know — explained practically, without the fluff.

📅 Important Dates — Exam to Result Timeline

Here's the expected sequence of events from exam day to counselling. Keep these dates bookmarked — missing a deadline can cost you your seat.

Note: NTA has not officially confirmed the answer key release date yet. Based on past years — in 2025 the answer key came about 10 days after the exam — most analysts expect it around 10–15 May 2026. The result is expected by 14 June 2026 at the latest.

📥 How to Download the Official Answer Key

Once NTA releases the provisional answer key at neet.nta.nic.in, here's exactly what you need to do. The steps are the same every year — login, select your paper code, download the PDF, and match your answers.

1

Open the official NTA NEET portal

Go to neet.nta.nic.in in your browser. This is the only official portal — do not trust third-party sites claiming to host the official key. The site may be slow on release day due to heavy traffic; try early morning or late night.

2

Find the Answer Key notification

On the homepage, look for a link titled "NEET UG 2026 Answer Key" or "Provisional Answer Key 2026" in the Latest News / Public Notices section. NTA adds it prominently so you won't need to dig around.

3

Log in with your credentials

Click the download link. You'll be redirected to a login page. Enter your Application Number and Date of Birth (or Password). These are the same credentials you used during registration.

4

Select your paper code

NEET 2026 was distributed in four paper codes — 11, 12, 13, and 14. Your paper code is printed on the top of your question booklet. Select the correct code to get the right answer key — matching the wrong code will give inaccurate results.

5

Download the answer key PDF

The PDF will open on screen. Click Download or Save. Also download your OMR Response Sheet from the same portal — it shows exactly what bubbles you filled. Compare the two side by side.

6

Match responses and calculate your score

Go through your OMR sheet question by question. Mark each answer as Correct (+4), Wrong (−1), or Unattempted (0). Tally up the final score using the formula in the calculator below. Done — you have your expected score.

Pro tip: NTA sometimes also sends the OMR sheet and answer key link to your registered email. Check your inbox (and spam folder) on the day of release — it saves the hassle of navigating a slow server.

📄 Unofficial Answer Keys — Available Right Now

You don't have to wait for NTA. Major coaching institutes release their own memory-based answer keys within hours of the exam ending. These are prepared by experienced faculty and are typically 95–99% accurate compared to the final official key.

Use coaching keys to get a rough score estimate immediately. But treat it as an estimate — always cross-check with the official NTA key when it comes out, since the final result is based only on NTA's key.

Important: Coaching keys are memory-based — faculty reconstruct questions from students' recollections right after the exam. Occasional errors do happen. If a coaching key answer differs from your memory or another source, wait for the official NTA key before drawing conclusions.

⚠️ How to Challenge the Answer Key

If you believe NTA has given an incorrect answer for any question in the provisional answer key, you can officially challenge it. NTA takes all objections seriously — in past years, several questions have been revised based on valid challenges, improving scores for thousands of students.

Challenge Process — Key Details

How to Challenge

Only online, through the official challenge portal at neet.nta.nic.in. No offline or email challenges are accepted.

Challenge Fee

₹200 per question challenged. This fee is completely non-refundable — even if your challenge is accepted and NTA revises the answer.

Window Duration

Typically 4–5 days after the provisional answer key is released. Do not miss this window — no extensions are given.

What You Need

You must submit supporting evidence — NCERT page references, scientific publications, or other textbook sources that back your answer.

Review Process

NTA appoints subject expert committees to review every objection. If accepted, the answer key is revised for all candidates — not just the challenger.

After Challenge

NTA publishes the final answer key after reviewing all objections. The result is then prepared based only on the final key — not the provisional one.

Strategy tip: Don't challenge questions impulsively. Only challenge if you have a clear NCERT or textbook reference supporting a different answer. Challenges based on coaching institute keys alone — without a textbook source — are almost never accepted.

🏥 What Does Your Score Mean for Admission?

Your NEET score determines your All India Rank (AIR), which then decides which colleges you can target. Here's a realistic picture of what different score ranges mean for MBBS admissions in 2026:

Expected Score Approx AIR (General) Admission Chances Best Options

Final 2026 admission cutoffs will only be known after counselling. If you're unsure about your options, speak to a counsellor before making any decisions.
